From the reviews
Contrary to the prevailing opinions in the reviews seen here, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at this place. If you are looking for a violin family instrument or a classical or flamenco guitar, this guy has it.
Today I came in to buy first violin after 1 introduction class. I came here because it is a locally owned store near by and honestly best decision I made. I came in around 11pm and it was stuffed with various gorgeous instruments lining the walls. I called in asking for a beginners viloin with at budget of 400-500$.
This store is a real gem and the Bay Area is lucky to have it. The owner Randy spent several hours patiently finding guitars for me to try, while explaining the history and attributes of each one. Randy was kind, patient, and extremely knowledgeable, and obviously has spent a lifetime around fine musical instruments.
I usually do not do reviews unless the product and service meet or exceed my expectations. I purchased a fine classical guitar made in Brazil. It is a 2007 but looks just like new. Amazing! I spoke to the owner Randy who was extremely helpful, respectful and professional.
Selling or trading gear at Fine Fretted String Instruments
Fine Fretted String Instruments comes up for buying and trading used gear — confirmed on their own site. Two things make the trip go better. First, bring the whole package: the case or gig bag, the original tremolo arm or bridge parts, the paperwork if you have it — a complete rig is worth real money more than a bare instrument, and it saves the back-and-forth of "can you bring the case in?" Second, know that trade credit almost always beats the cash offer, usually by a healthy margin — if you're upgrading anyway, price your old gear as a trade against the new one before you take cash. Either way, expect the offer to be below what the gear sells for on the wall; the gap is the store's margin for setup, warranty, and sitting on it until the right buyer walks in.
Lessons at Fine Fretted String Instruments
Reviews and the store's own info mention lessons at Fine Fretted String Instruments. If you're signing up a beginner (or restarting yourself), a quick call ahead answers the three things that matter: which instruments they teach, whether the schedule has openings at the time you actually need, and what a first lesson costs. There's no wrong first guitar — a good teacher will happily work with whatever you walk in with, and a shop that teaches usually keeps affordable starter instruments on hand for exactly this reason.
