From the reviews
Hobo guitars is a great shop. Always an appealing selection of guitars. Mike's vast knowledge of all things regarding gear and music have been of invaluable benefit to me. He is a very patient and versatile guitar teacher whose lessons have yielded an amazing amount of progress within a short span of time.
I had a great experience dealing with Mike, the owner. He was friendly, very knowledgeable, and managed to repair my guitar while I waited. Not pushy at all, in my opinion; just willing to share his expertise on a subject in which he happens to be a professional; stringed instruments.
I read the reviews before I moved to Ukiah, weighing whether to take a new guitar back to Guitar Center in Vegas for a half-assed setup or wait for a small town shop in my new location. I'm glad I waited. Mike was exceptional. He did top notch service on my new Ibanez Premium. It seriously plays effortlessly.
We are fortunate to have a true craftsman in town. Mike can set-up, build or repair most any guitar or stringed instrument. He'll honestly tell you if it's worth the expense to fix and is very fair and reasonable in what he charges. Saved me several times and turns stuff around really quickly. Excellent musician.
Selling or trading gear at hobo guitars
hobo guitars comes up for buying and trading used gear — confirmed on their own site. Two things make the trip go better. First, bring the whole package: the case or gig bag, the original tremolo arm or bridge parts, the paperwork if you have it — a complete rig is worth real money more than a bare instrument, and it saves the back-and-forth of "can you bring the case in?" Second, know that trade credit almost always beats the cash offer, usually by a healthy margin — if you're upgrading anyway, price your old gear as a trade against the new one before you take cash. Either way, expect the offer to be below what the gear sells for on the wall; the gap is the store's margin for setup, warranty, and sitting on it until the right buyer walks in.
