From the reviews
The store is too small for it's amount of stock so it's pretty hard to move around in, and not at all wheelchair accessible. That being said they have a pretty big selection and the person who's always behind the counter is pretty kind and knowledgeable. They're always playing vintage video game music, which is fun.
The folks at Supersonic Music have certainly proven themselves to be some of the best in the industry. I've had excellent customer service with them every time I've walked in the door, and they are always eager to answer any questions I may have; Michael and Derek have been excellent in specific!
We are very fortunate to have two outstanding music stores in Lawrence. Supersonic has a more broad range of products. In addition to guitars, they also have a lot of drums, percussion, keyboards and amplifiers. They also stock a wide range of effects pedals, digital audio accessories and microphones.
called in a little later in the day and asked if I could get some help restringing one of my guitars. took it in and the guy up front immediately figured out that one of the tuners was broken so he swapped it out, gave me a new string, and gave me a ton of advice for when I gotta restring next time.
Selling or trading gear at Supersonic Music
Supersonic Music comes up for buying and trading used gear — confirmed on their own site. Two things make the trip go better. First, bring the whole package: the case or gig bag, the original tremolo arm or bridge parts, the paperwork if you have it — a complete rig is worth real money more than a bare instrument, and it saves the back-and-forth of "can you bring the case in?" Second, know that trade credit almost always beats the cash offer, usually by a healthy margin — if you're upgrading anyway, price your old gear as a trade against the new one before you take cash. Either way, expect the offer to be below what the gear sells for on the wall; the gap is the store's margin for setup, warranty, and sitting on it until the right buyer walks in.
Lessons at Supersonic Music
Reviews and the store's own info mention lessons at Supersonic Music. If you're signing up a beginner (or restarting yourself), a quick call ahead answers the three things that matter: which instruments they teach, whether the schedule has openings at the time you actually need, and what a first lesson costs. There's no wrong first guitar — a good teacher will happily work with whatever you walk in with, and a shop that teaches usually keeps affordable starter instruments and rentals on hand for exactly this reason.
