From the reviews
It's always such a pleasure to do business with 5th String Music. A small shop with primarily acoustic instruments, their main brands of guitars are Eastman and Larivee. And this is for good reason, as these guitars are extremely good quality for your dollar (particularly the Eastmans). Susan, the owner.
I went to 5th string today to do some homework on a guitar i'm looking at buying. From the moment I walked in to the moment I stepped out, they were AWESOME! Very personal, but not intrusive or bothering; highly professional and informative. This store is great!
I've been taking bluegrass banjo lessons out of this establishment for a few months now and have been really satisfied by the instructor (Charles Wood). He is apparently one of if not the only bluegrass style instructor in town, but has been playing for over 30 years so definitely knows what he's talking about.
I am currently taking guitar lessons with Susan, and my oldest son just bought a new guitar from 5th String. I could not be any happier with either experience. When you buy from 5th String, you are truly buying local, and that is a huge deal to my family.
Selling or trading gear at 5th String Music
5th String Music comes up for buying and trading used gear — confirmed on their own site. Two things make the trip go better. First, bring the whole package: the case or gig bag, the original tremolo arm or bridge parts, the paperwork if you have it — a complete rig is worth real money more than a bare instrument, and it saves the back-and-forth of "can you bring the case in?" Second, know that trade credit almost always beats the cash offer, usually by a healthy margin — if you're upgrading anyway, price your old gear as a trade against the new one before you take cash. Either way, expect the offer to be below what the gear sells for on the wall; the gap is the store's margin for setup, warranty, and sitting on it until the right buyer walks in.
Lessons at 5th String Music
Reviews and the store's own info mention lessons at 5th String Music. If you're signing up a beginner (or restarting yourself), a quick call ahead answers the three things that matter: which instruments they teach, whether the schedule has openings at the time you actually need, and what a first lesson costs. There's no wrong first guitar — a good teacher will happily work with whatever you walk in with, and a shop that teaches usually keeps affordable starter instruments on hand for exactly this reason.
