From the reviews
Truly a great *real* mom and pop music shop. Real musicians working there and great selection, service and lessons! I picked up a nice Normandy special clarinet for $180 and was treated fair and felt the place was an honest establishment. I doubt that I am in the minority with this belief!
Knapp's Music has got to be one of the, if not the oldest music stores in Bangor area. Right downtown the place has a wicked cool vibe and you never know what gem's you might find there. Dan is awesome and will help you find the perfect instrument.
I have bought several instruments and amps from Knapp's Music over the years and have gotten good deals. I also have had many repairs done there too. They repaired my classical guitar, setup my electric guitars, repaired my distortion pedals, and my synthesizer. I would definitely recommend them.
Knapp music went out of their way for me. They had a travel guitar I wanted. I bought it but it has some issues - not at all fault of the store. They fixed it and shipped it after it broke without any charge. They genuinely just wanted me to have an awesome lil' guitar. Support this place!
Selling or trading gear at Knapp's Music Center
Knapp's Music Center comes up for buying and trading used gear — confirmed on their own site. Two things make the trip go better. First, bring the whole package: the case or gig bag, the original tremolo arm or bridge parts, the paperwork if you have it — a complete rig is worth real money more than a bare instrument, and it saves the back-and-forth of "can you bring the case in?" Second, know that trade credit almost always beats the cash offer, usually by a healthy margin — if you're upgrading anyway, price your old gear as a trade against the new one before you take cash. Either way, expect the offer to be below what the gear sells for on the wall; the gap is the store's margin for setup, warranty, and sitting on it until the right buyer walks in.
Lessons at Knapp's Music Center
Reviews and the store's own info mention lessons at Knapp's Music Center. If you're signing up a beginner (or restarting yourself), a quick call ahead answers the three things that matter: which instruments they teach, whether the schedule has openings at the time you actually need, and what a first lesson costs. There's no wrong first guitar — a good teacher will happily work with whatever you walk in with, and a shop that teaches usually keeps affordable starter instruments on hand for exactly this reason.
