What's on the wall
“I also bought shoulder rests, rosins, strings, and had a professional bridge carved out for my acoustic/electric violin.”
“I used the cello for a professional recording session as well as a purely acoustic session and it worked great for both.”
“The instruments I brought in for repair came to life and reached a whole new level.”
“If you need violin lessons, go to Kendra, because very soon, she will be busy, and the only time you'll be able to see her, would be with a ticket in to the LA Phil!”
“LA Violin shop cares about their customers and from my recent experience, I can say that they go above and beyond to make sure your musical instrument needs are taken care of.”
What players say again and again
“The luthiers are top, and the staff is kind, courteous, and welcoming.”
“The store staff were very helpful and they tuned the violin and set it up perfectly.”
“I decided to go with it and was charged an extremely reasonable price, making it realistic for me to pursue music in LA without my own instrument.”
“However if you just want an instrument for a beginner student in grade school, you would have to decide if a $500 dollar violin is worth it.”
From the reviews
I came into the shop wishing to rent a cello for a short-term stay in LA. I was pleasantly surprised to be given an extremely nice-sounding cello to test out before deciding to rent one.
We had a great violin buying experience for my daughter. Her teacher recommended that she try instruments at this this shop and the more established shop in Hollywood. We were shown about an equal number of instruments at both shops, but in the end the selections didn't compare.
This is an excellent violin shop. Although almost all the violins were out of our price range, we did get a student full size violin. The store staff were very helpful and they tuned the violin and set it up perfectly. If you do need a violin I highly recommend this store.
I must have gotten lucky when I showed up my first time to this place. Came in looking for a cool case. They re-stringed my violin. Gave me a quick tour of the path of their violin builds. It got packed pretty quickly but I had gotten time to experience the violin world. I want to check out the nice room next time.
Selling or trading gear at Los Angeles Violin Shop
Los Angeles Violin Shop comes up for buying and trading used gear — confirmed on their own site. Two things make the trip go better. First, bring the whole package: the case or gig bag, the original tremolo arm or bridge parts, the paperwork if you have it — a complete rig is worth real money more than a bare instrument, and it saves the back-and-forth of "can you bring the case in?" Second, know that trade credit almost always beats the cash offer, usually by a healthy margin — if you're upgrading anyway, price your old gear as a trade against the new one before you take cash. Either way, expect the offer to be below what the gear sells for on the wall; the gap is the store's margin for setup, warranty, and sitting on it until the right buyer walks in.
