From the reviews
This place is GREAT ! Over the years I’ve wandered in to tinker with one of the many quality new and used guitars they have on hand, but where they REALLY shine is in the repair arena. They do meticulous high calibre repairs and mods and usually in record time.
I love mountain music! Have been taking piano lessons here since Fall 2022. My teacher has made learning really fun and low stakes for an adult beginner. Despite several staff changes the care and dedication of the team towards developing a welcoming and cozy musical environment has been consistent.
Was looking for a starter ukelele for my niece and came across Mountain Music on a google search. What a cute store! The staff was incredibly helpful and found several options for me and tuned them so I could hear the difference in sound quality. I opted for a pink Waterman from Kala (seems fitting for a 5yo).
Adam does fantastic work. He handles guitar/bass repairs at 25th Street Recording, one of the West Coasts premier Recording Studios. I can't recommend him enough. A high quality local music shop like this is rare in the age of Guitar Center. We're lucky to have them in Oakland.
Selling or trading gear at Mountain Music
Mountain Music comes up for buying and trading used gear — confirmed on their own site. Two things make the trip go better. First, bring the whole package: the case or gig bag, the original tremolo arm or bridge parts, the paperwork if you have it — a complete rig is worth real money more than a bare instrument, and it saves the back-and-forth of "can you bring the case in?" Second, know that trade credit almost always beats the cash offer, usually by a healthy margin — if you're upgrading anyway, price your old gear as a trade against the new one before you take cash. Either way, expect the offer to be below what the gear sells for on the wall; the gap is the store's margin for setup, warranty, and sitting on it until the right buyer walks in.
Lessons at Mountain Music
Reviews and the store's own info mention lessons at Mountain Music. If you're signing up a beginner (or restarting yourself), a quick call ahead answers the three things that matter: which instruments they teach, whether the schedule has openings at the time you actually need, and what a first lesson costs. There's no wrong first guitar — a good teacher will happily work with whatever you walk in with, and a shop that teaches usually keeps affordable starter instruments and rentals on hand for exactly this reason.
