What's on the wall
“James did a couple of bone nuts on my electrics and an expert install of a K&K on my acoustic.”
“Most recently, he worked on a relic Strat build and his work was flawless—it now plays and feels as good as (if not better than) a Masterbuilt Fender.”
“Took my old Japanese Les Paul copy bass to this gentleman to replace all the wiring, pots, and switches.”
“The communication, professionalism, flexibility with timing, attention to detail, and genuine care he puts into both the instrument and the customer is rare these days.”
“I’ve had James install pickups, full refret, full set up adjusting for new tunings and string gauges and my guitars come back perfect every time.”
“I recently took a new mandolin in to have it set up and James did a wonderful job of it!”

What players say again and again
“Its been 8 months now and I have to express my satisfaction publicly now that some time has passed and U have had a chance to really dig into the new set up.”
“When I go to a repair shop, I hope they treat the instrument as their own and do meticulous work as I would if I had the expertise.”
“My guitar sounds great and the work was way more affordable than I expected.”
From the reviews
I came in for a pickup install on a custom made acoustic. James recommended the perfect device for my needs. I went away for a trip and when I returned, my guitar was ready for pickup. The install was expertly done, completely non-invasive to my beloved instrument.
I went to James with my Martin D15 that I'd had for over 20 years but had never really had it properly set up. James is very chill and extremely approachable, but his work on my guitar was nothing short of phenomenal.
I’m never taking my guitars anywhere else. I brought my Strat in for a few different issues and got a great cash offer for it while it was in the shop and agreed to sell it. Then I got it back from James at PGR, and I’m never selling this guitar. Ever.
Recently brought James a vintage Yamaha Nippon Gakki FG-580 for a new bridge and complete setup. I thought I was in trouble as the frets seemed quite worn to me and I was dreading the cost of a neck reset and re-fret.
Lessons at Portland Guitar Repair
Reviews and the store's own info mention lessons at Portland Guitar Repair. If you're signing up a beginner (or restarting yourself), a quick call ahead answers the three things that matter: which instruments they teach, whether the schedule has openings at the time you actually need, and what a first lesson costs. There's no wrong first guitar — a good teacher will happily work with whatever you walk in with, and a shop that teaches usually keeps affordable starter instruments on hand for exactly this reason.
