From the reviews
Took a bass player from an old band there. He immediately fell in love with the place and the shop keepers treated him very well.He ended up playing many high end stringed instruments and went home and called them and placed a deposit on two he liked the most.
I called regarding a guitar for my 10 year old and I was so impressed on how much info I received over the phone and the friendliness was top notch! We then went to the store and received the best customer service!
Every time I've been there, whether to buy a guitar or a single pick, they've treated me very well. They also have a very good guitar tech on site. You can't sit in this store all day and bang on $3000.00 Martins (like you can at Guitar Center) but it's a nice neighborhood guitar store.
Fantastic music store! Great selection of new and vintage musical instruments and amps, with hip and educated sales staff who happened to be incredibly friendly and funny. Beware the ventriloquist dummies lurking about the store. I swear to God their eyes are following me.
Selling or trading gear at The Berkley Music Company
The Berkley Music Company comes up for buying and trading used gear — confirmed on their own site. Two things make the trip go better. First, bring the whole package: the case or gig bag, the original tremolo arm or bridge parts, the paperwork if you have it — a complete rig is worth real money more than a bare instrument, and it saves the back-and-forth of "can you bring the case in?" Second, know that trade credit almost always beats the cash offer, usually by a healthy margin — if you're upgrading anyway, price your old gear as a trade against the new one before you take cash. Either way, expect the offer to be below what the gear sells for on the wall; the gap is the store's margin for setup, warranty, and sitting on it until the right buyer walks in.
Lessons at The Berkley Music Company
Reviews and the store's own info mention lessons at The Berkley Music Company. If you're signing up a beginner (or restarting yourself), a quick call ahead answers the three things that matter: which instruments they teach, whether the schedule has openings at the time you actually need, and what a first lesson costs. There's no wrong first guitar — a good teacher will happily work with whatever you walk in with, and a shop that teaches usually keeps affordable starter instruments on hand for exactly this reason.
