America's Guitar Capitals (2026)

Every list of "best music cities" is vibes. This one is a store count. We mapped 8,315 US guitar and musical instrument stores, rolled them up by city, and ranked the results two ways — raw count, and stores per resident. Updated 2026-07-15.

The most guitar stores, period

By raw count the biggest markets win, as you'd expect — New York leads with 35 stores. The interesting rows are further down: Nashville matches Chicago's store count with less than a third of Chicago's population, and Las Vegas out-stocks Los Angeles outright. Music towns punch far above their census weight.

2 Houston, TX 31 2,390,125 1.3

14 Denver, CO 21 729,019 2.9
15 Fort Worth, TX 21 1,008,106 2.1

New York's boroughs are listed the way stores list themselves — Brooklyn's 24 stores sit in their own row (census population isn't tracked at borough level in our source, hence the dash).

Major cities (500k+), per resident

Divide by population and the story changes. Among big cities, Tucson, Arizona is America's guitar capital per resident at 4.2 stores per 100k, with Las Vegas and Portland right behind — and Nashville proving the nickname at 3.3 per 100k, ahead of Austin's 2.6. Music City doesn't have the most stores in America; it has one of the highest concentrations of them per player.

Methodology: store counts come from our continuously maintained national directory of 8,315 guitar and musical instrument stores (public business listings, filtered to genuine stores — no recording studios, DJ services, or lesson-only studios). Cities are rolled up by the city name on each store's address, so suburbs count separately from their metro anchor. Population = US Census 2024 city estimates (consolidated-government names normalized, e.g. Nashville-Davidson → Nashville). Per-100k = stores ÷ population × 100,000. The CSV covers every US city with 5+ stores. More lenses: the state-by-state stats hub, the best-cities ranking (density × rating), and the best stores by state.
