What's on the wall
“A must-stop for lovers of physical media, rare finds, and good music.”
“the few times I went, a few years ago, many of the records I fancied — of the 70s spiritual jazz ilk — were represses, which was a bit disappointing, because I prefer used.”
What players say again and again
“Very New York experience, other than the reasonable prices.”
From the reviews
Great selection of jazz music in LP and CDs. More wax than plastic. New and used stock. More used than new. Pretty good prices too. There is no store front. You have buzz in from the street of catch the door when someone is leaving the building. It’s an elevator ride up. Friendly-ish staff.
staff is often a bit pretentious, but in an old-timey librarian sense that i find almost entertaining. like steve buscemi in ghost world, but a few notches less endearing. anyway, none of the prices are *great*, but it is truly worth going to. one of a kind shop, entering the place is entering a world all its own.
THIS PLACE IS A JAZZ LOVER’S DREAM. Extensive selection of jazz, even contemporary jazz / nu jazz — the records are well organised and decently priced. If you love jazz, you *will* find a record or 5 to take home with you. Will definitely be back!
Fun spot to hunt for jazz and blues records and CDs. Prices are generally fair, though there are no bargains to be found and I found it to be slightly higher than average (hence four instead of five stars). Still, the stock is plentiful and there are fun additions like posters and books about jazz as well.
Selling or trading gear at Jazz Record Center
Jazz Record Center comes up for buying and trading used gear — confirmed on their own site. Two things make the trip go better. First, bring the whole package: the case or gig bag, the original tremolo arm or bridge parts, the paperwork if you have it — a complete rig is worth real money more than a bare instrument, and it saves the back-and-forth of "can you bring the case in?" Second, know that trade credit almost always beats the cash offer, usually by a healthy margin — if you're upgrading anyway, price your old gear as a trade against the new one before you take cash. Either way, expect the offer to be below what the gear sells for on the wall; the gap is the store's margin for setup, warranty, and sitting on it until the right buyer walks in.
